The UK’s BlackBerry fans will now be getting a touchscreen-QWERTY slider combination with the launch of the Blackberry Torch 9800 on the Three network and soon to be arriving on other networks (already on Vodafone)

The first smartphone from RIM to feature both a capacitive touchscreen and a slider keyboard design, the BlackBerry Torch also debuts the new BB OS 6. Bringing with it all the benefits of the updated operating system, the Torch handset supports improved multitasking, a swifter browser, and enhanced media functions.

In addition to the standard BlackBerry features such as email, BlackBerry Messenger and BlackBerry App World, on Three the Torch 9800 comes with free Twitter and Windows Live Messenger.

The Torch has a 3.2 inch screen, 4GB internal memory, and a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus, flash and video recorder. The phone supports up to 29 hours of music playback, and the battery lets you chat for up to 340 minutes.

Sylvia Chind, Head of Branded Devices at Three said: “When paired with Three’s high speed network, the BlackBerry Torch really comes into its own, allowing users to access their favourite web pages and social networking sites with ease.”
You’ll be able to get hold of the Torch for £249 on a £35 a month contract with the network provider.

Three has also launched its BlackBerry Pay As You Go offering. Three’s Sylvia Chind added: “With the growth of our 3G network across the UK, we want to give more people access to our smartphones and services, so opening the BlackBerry range up to PAYG customers was an easy decision for us. Providing new BlackBerry owners with more flexibility than before, PAYG customers can enjoy Three’s award winning network.”

The Curve 9300 is the first handset to be available on PAYG on Three, and other BlackBerry phones will be offered on PAYG later this year.
